Offered for sale is an unusual rare shape Lucia Midcentury modern posy vase dating to the 1950's ; this is a slip cast earthenware vase with a bulbous body slightly flaring neck and round footring. The vase has an openwork /fretwork motif of finger like lozenges cut into the body of the vase to create a bold modernist pattern of organic shapes which complement the shape of the vase. The colourway is a bold canary/daffodil yellow glaze which completes the eye popping visual statement. The base has impressed marks Lucia , the manufactuer and a serial number 1703 probably the shape/form production code.Lucia ceramics were made in Boksburg on the East Rand of Johannesburg ; the company produced ceramics from the late 1940s until the early 1960s. At its height Lucia had more than 3000 registered shapes/forms in its catalogue and was indisputably the most prolific and commercially successful of the Midcentury South African decorative ceramic manufacturers. The wide variety of shapes and bold colours appealed to consumers then and have stood the test of time , fun decor items.
