Description: Lucia Ware Sinterklaas Feast Platter / Serving Trough.
Handcrafted in South Africa by the historic Boksburg East Pottery (BEP), this piece features their signature rich, high-gloss maroon-burgundy airbrushed glaze fading into a smooth cream interior well. The apex serves as a handle, intricately moulded in relief with the image of Sinterklaas wearing his traditional bishop's mitre hat alongside his iconic golden crosier staff. The base is hand-incised with the official factory pattern mark "1813".
This heavy, slip-cast earthenware platter is a magnificent example of mid-to-late 20th-century South African commercial pottery art. It features an exceptionally deep, wide scoop design, making it highly functional for modern kitchen presentation or large-scale holiday table service.
Did you know that Lucia Ware is famous among South African pottery collectors for its signature airbrushed burgundy hues? This specific piece represents a fascinating cultural crossover, depicting the Dutch traditional figure of Sinterklaas, who rewards children with spiced biscuits (speculaas) and candies on December 5th.
Original Intended Use: Traditional festive candy scoop platter, holiday biscuit tray, or Saint Nicholas feast day serving dish.
Alternate Suggested Use: A high-impact kitchen stovetop spoon rest, a festive holiday table centerpiece trough, or an eye-catching display piece for a collection of vintage South African studio pottery.
Made in South Africa (Boksburg), Mid-Century Vintage Era (Circa 1960s1970s).
Condition: Very Good Vintage Condition. Outstanding structural stability with a high-shine glossy glaze finish and exceptional shelf appeal.
Visible Flaws: Minor age-related wear. Features a single, faint, vertical under-glaze craze line running down the interior floor of the scoop well (clearly highlighted in our macro close-up photos). This is a purely cosmetic, natural manufacturing stress cooling line that does not penetrate to the reverse side and does not affect the structural strength of the pottery. The unglazed base ring displays typical, light vintage shelf scuffs and friction dust. No chips, structural fractures, flea bites or repairs.
