Lupinus hartwegii is a unique variety of Lupin, a dwarf annual that is quite unlike the perennial, tall garden Lupins that we are used to. With a softer and with more relaxed shape to the blooms they grow to just 30 to 40cm in height. The plants are suitable for use at the front of borders and are eye-catching when planted in large masses. They also are ideal for smaller gardens where they can be enjoyed in window boxes or in containers on the patio.
They’ bloom in a lovely range of colours, the short spikes of scented flowers appear in blue, mauve, rose, pink, lavender and white. Very easy to grow and quick to bloom, they are a lovely variety for children to grow. Seeds can be simply sown directly where they are to grow. These free flowering plants will grow well in any good garden soil in full sun or part shade. Highly attractive to bees and other pollinators, the scented blooms make a wonderful cut flower, lasting up to five days in a vase. The blooms have a delicate sweet pea fragrance in the evenings.
Sow seeds directly where they are to grow in spring. An early autumn sowing can be made in sheltered areas for earlier flowers the following year. Prepare the ground well and rake to a fine tilth before sowing. Mark the sowing areas with a ring of light coloured sand and label if sowing more than one annual in the same bed. Sow 1mm ”) deep in rows 30cm apart. Sow thinly, 6mm deep in drills 30cm apart in well-cultivated soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Water ground regularly, especially in dry periods. Seeds germinate in 15 to 30 days. The seedlings will appear in rows approx 6 to 8 weeks after planting and can be told from nearby weed seedlings quite easily. Thin the seedlings out so they are finally 30cm apart by early summer.
