Description:
Upright perennial with stiff, ovate mid-green basal leaves and hairy stems bearing smaller, clasping stem leaves with heart-shaped bases. Rounded, umbel-like cymes of star-shaped scarlet flowers, each petal having two deep notches, in early to midsummer.

Cultivation:
Moist, fertile soil in full sun or partial shade. Dead-head to prolong flowering.

Propagation:
Seed surface sown at 21C, as light is needed for germination. Can benefit from stratification, or sow in fall when ripe. Moist, fertile, well-drained soil; poor and alkaline soils tolerated. Good light; some shade tolerated. Divide spring or fall.

Design and Other Uses:
Flower border and bedding.
