LYDENBURG: LOCAL BRITISH OCCUPATION ISSUE - THREE PENCE ON ONE-PENNY ROSE-RED AND GREEN - MOUNTED MINT (Issued September 1900)
Following the occupation of Lydenburg by British forces on 6 September 1900 during the South African War, a local provisional issue was introduced. This specimen consists of a contemporary one-penny rose-red and green definitive stamp of the South African Republic (Transvaal) surcharged V.R.I. / 3d. to reflect the new authority and denomination. Catalogued as Stanley Gibbons number SG 2 under the local British occupation issues, this example remains in mounted mint condition. This specimen was acquired from the collection of Ronald Carlson of McKinney, Texas.
