MAARTENS, Maretha - Gezina en die Bruin Wind - (Pragtige Hardeband)

Boek lyk vir my nog splinternuut en ongelees.    >>>  It is a story told from the POV of a young girl (Gezina) as she lives through the second Anglo-Boer War in a concentration camp with her mother and 6 siblings.   The concentration camps during the war were horrific and more women and children died there from hunger, infection etc. than the men who physically fought in the war.  BUT Mrs. Maartens, although not quite sugar-coating what happened, does make it palatable for young readers (this being a YA book and all). Her book is not one about hate, but about people and some of what they go through in war. In the book she says the freedom before war and the freedom after war are never the same freedoms. It is not a violent book, but it is sad. As an adult one sees so much violence, real and fake, that you become complacent and not easily shocked - if I read this book as an adult for the 1st time, I would have given it 4 stars because I'm used to reading much worse. I don't think that would be fair however, as it is for YA and I remember the impact it made on me when I was a YA. So, 5 stars it is.
