Charles Rennie Mackintosh ranks with Otto Wagner and Frank Lloyd Wright as one of the truly original creative talents of a generation whose careers spanned the tum of the century. Mackintosh's widespread importance as an innovator rests surprisingly on only fourteen completed buildings, and one in particular, the Glasgow School of Art, is today universally acknowledged as being a milestone in the history of modern architecture. In this building may be seen the development in the architect's work from Scottish Baronial and Art Nouveau influences in the original building of 1897-9 to the geometric purism of Modernism in the extension of 1907-9. Mackintosh's original deployment of space and sensitive handling of materials, colour and decoration continue to provide invaluable inspiration for architects practising today.
This book catalogues Macintosh's architectural projects, and shows the extent of his achievements in terms of completed buildings, interiors, alterations, unexecuted designs and competition entries both successful and unpremiated. Each scheme is illustrated with photographs and, where possible, original drawings, and accompanied by a description including notes on its present condition and whereabouts of original documents.
In the case of both the Glasgow School of Art and Hill House, Helensburgh ten plates have now been added in colour. In addition there is a guide to Mackintosh collections in Scotland, a selected bibliography and a map of Glasgow showing the location of extant buildings.
