Gustave Flaubert (1821 to 1880)
Born in Rouen, Normandy, into a family of doctors and surgeons, Gustave Flaubert rejected the bourgeois world of his upbringing to devote his life obsessively to literature. After a brief flirtation with law studies in Paris, he retreated to his family estate at Croisset, where he lived mostly in seclusion, laboring with legendary intensity over his prose. He famously sought le mot juste the exact right word spending days on a single sentence in pursuit of stylistic perfection.
Flaubert is widely regarded as the father of the modern realist novel. He combined meticulous observation of everyday life with a cool, ironic detachment and exquisite craftsmanship. His style is precise, rhythmic, and impersonally objective he aimed to make the author disappear from the work, letting the details and characters speak for themselves. This approach profoundly changed fiction, moving it away from Romantic exaggeration toward psychological realism and formal discipline.
