Developer: EA Tiburon
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Genre: Sports / American Football
Release: 2017
Madden NFL 18 is a solid entry in EA's long-running football series, introducing the Frostbite engine to the franchise and adding the cinematic Longshot story mode. Alongside the traditional Franchise, Ultimate Team, and exhibition modes, it offers a more polished visual presentation and several gameplay refinements. However, some familiar Madden issues remain, particularly around AI, animations, and the depth of certain modes.
Madden 18 offers the familiar Madden formula:
Full 11-on-11 NFL gameplay
Passing, running, tackling and defensive coverage
Play calling and audibles
Franchise management
Madden Ultimate Team
Online multiplayer
A major addition is the choice between two gameplay styles:
Arcade
Faster-paced
More spectacular plays
More forgiving mechanics
Designed for casual players
Simulation
More emphasis on realistic statistics and football situations
More punishing mistakes
Closer to traditional Madden gameplay
There is also Competitive gameplay, designed around direct player skill.
Responsive controls
Improved passing mechanics
Strong variety of offensive and defensive plays
Different gameplay styles suit different players
Satisfying running and tackling animations
AI can still make questionable decisions
Some animations occasionally look awkward
Defensive coverage isn't always consistent
Gameplay remains familiar rather than revolutionary
The basic football remains enjoyable, particularly when playing against another person.
One of the biggest additions is Longshot, Madden's first major cinematic story campaign.
You play as Devin Wade, a former high-school football star attempting to revive his career and reach the NFL, alongside his friend Colin Cole.
The mode combines:
Cinematic scenes
Dialogue choices
Football matches
Training sequences
Decision-making
Performance-based progression
Adds a new dimension to the franchise
Stronger narrative focus than traditional Madden modes
Good production values
Interesting attempt to make football storytelling more cinematic
Relatively short
Some choices have limited consequences
Gameplay sections are simplified
Story can feel predictable
Longshot isn't a replacement for a full RPG-style career, but it is a welcome addition that gives Madden something different to offer.
Franchise remains one of the game's major modes.
Players can:
Control an NFL team
Play through multiple seasons
Manage rosters
Sign and release players
Draft rookies
Develop players
Manage staff and team strategy
The mode provides considerable longevity, particularly for players who enjoy managing a team over multiple seasons.
However, the franchise experience doesn't represent a dramatic overhaul from previous editions. Some management systems feel relatively basic compared with dedicated sports-management games.
Huge long-term potential
Drafting and roster management are enjoyable
Multiple seasons provide excellent replay value
Good balance between playing and managing
Limited innovation
Some menus and management systems feel dated
AI roster decisions can be questionable
Madden Ultimate Team (MUT) returns as the collectible-card-based mode.
Players build a team by acquiring cards representing:
Players
Coaches
Uniforms
Stadiums
Playbooks
Other items
The mode provides:
Solo challenges
Online competition
Team-building objectives
Player upgrades
It can be extremely addictive for players who enjoy constantly improving their squad, although progression is closely connected to the game's card and currency systems.
Frostbite engine significantly improves presentation
Solid football gameplay
Multiple gameplay styles
Longshot is a welcome new mode
Excellent Franchise longevity
Huge amount of content
Strong multiplayer experience
Improved visual presentation
Limited innovation to core gameplay
AI can be inconsistent
Some awkward animations remain
Franchise mode could be deeper
Longshot is relatively short
Commentary becomes repetitive
Madden NFL 18 is a solid and enjoyable PS4 football game that successfully combines familiar Madden gameplay with improved visuals and the new Longshot story mode.
The Frostbite engine gives the presentation a noticeable boost, while Franchise and Ultimate Team provide plenty of longevity. However, the game doesn't dramatically reinvent the series, and some longstanding gameplay and AI problems remain.
For NFL fans looking for a polished football experience, Madden 18 offers plenty of content, but its biggest improvements are found in presentation and new modes rather than a fundamental transformation of the gameplay.
