360mm x 280mm reprint of the 1931 edition published by Atlantis-Verlag, this published 1962 by Akademische Druck- u. Verlagsanstalt Graz / Austria, no jacket. Original cloth with printed titling on front and spine, some light wear and discolouration evident in places, such as a tape-mark on the lower front. Tape marks appear again on the front and rear end papers, that are also tanned. Some sporadic foxing throughout. Two volumes in one, the first volume containing plates 1 -76, (a pair of these pages is stuck together at a small point of contact), the second volume plates 77 -144, one of which is a fold-out panorama of 4 pages, detailing Khotsa site in Basutoland, with a mis-folded corner. Plates are sketches, water-colour reproductions, and photographs. A Summary in English by Harold Pager follows; the text is predominantly German. Several limited pencil notes at places throughout by A.R. Willcox, to whom this book belonged. The first volume concentrates on Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), the second volume details rock art sites in the Free State, Natal, other parts of South Africa, and Basutoland (Lesotho). "Madsimu Dsangara" roughly translates to "Signs of the Ancestors".
