These notes were issued by authority of Lord Baden-Powell, the Commander of British Forces in Mafeking during the Boer War. The notes were printed with a hand carved block made from a croquet mallet. The notes were printed on ordinary writing paper. They were considered legal tender during the siege. The notes were signed by the manager of The Standard Bank, Mr. R. Urry. The understanding was that when hostilities ceased , the notes could be exchanged at The Standard Bank for legal currency. The notes were counter-signed by Capt. H. Greener, the Chief Paymaster.
