HEAVY VINTAGE GARNET AND OPAL 9ct YELLOW GOLD RING

This piece is a classic vintage English combination of garnets and opals set in 9ct yellow gold. What makes it different is its size! At just under 20 mm diameter, this is a large and showy ring. At 6,1 grams it is also a substantial piece of jewellery. The 1,17 carats of round faceted garnets are a very deep red - a single garnet providing the focal point, surrounded by the brilliance of 6 round cabochon iridescent fire opals (totalling 0,48 carats) which are in turn surrounded by 12 deep red garnets. The richness of the colour combination is enhanced by the glow of yellow gold in the claws that hold the gemstones and the simple shank that holds a very strong extended-claw cage that raises the head in a dome shape, 7mm above the finger. The pedigree of the piece is traceable in the hallmarks including '375' for 9ct gold, the Birmingham Assay mark, the jeweller's signature and the date 1970. Almost 50 years old but in excellent condition - there is not even a mark on the opals. Big and bold. And old!
