The Maidenhair Fern is elegant and soft, with fine, lace-like fronds that make it a standout fern. Yes, it can be a little fussy, but once you learn its rhythm, it rewards you with constant, fresh growth.

Commonly known as: Maidenhair Fern
Botanical name: Adiantum Raddianum
The Fern is one of those plants that feels timeless. Its delicate, fan-shaped fronds seem to dance on thin black stems, giving it an airy, graceful look. It's a plant with a reputation some say it's tricky, others say it's impossible. The truth is, it's not difficult if you understand what it likes: consistency.
Light: Think about where it grows in nature: tucked under taller trees, where it gets dappled light all day long. That's what you should aim for at home. Bright, indirect light is perfect. Avoid dark corners, and don't let harsh afternoon sun touch the fronds, as they'll crisp up quickly.
💧 Watering: This is where most people go wrong. Maidenhairs hate drying out. The moment the soil goes bone dry, the fronds collapse and crisp. Keep the soil evenly moist, checking every few days. Water thoroughly and let excess drain away, but don't leave it sitting in a saucer. A light, regular hand is much better than occasional heavy drenching.
🌡 Temperature & Humidity: Warm and steady conditions are best between 1826°C. They also thrive in humidity. Bathrooms and kitchens are perfect spots, but if yours is in the lounge, mist it often or group it with other plants to keep the air moist.
🪴 Soil & Repotting: They like light, airy soil that drains but doesn't dry out too fast. Our Aroid Mix is excellent, or you can mix Barks Unlimited Potting Soil with Perlite. Add Bark Chips when repotting. Refresh the soil every year or two rather than always upsizing the pot.
🍃 Fertiliser: They're hungry little growers. Feed with Controlled Release Fertiliser every couple of months, and top up with Organic Fertiliser in the growing season.
🐛 Pests: Usually pest-free, but if unhappy, they may attract aphids or scale. Treat with insecticidal spray and keep an eye on the fronds.
Yes, the Maidenhair Fern asks for attention, but it's worth it no other fern brings quite the same level of elegance.
