In 1901 Commandant Wynand Malan attacked the isolated Northern Cape village of Richmond on two occasions. He was opposed by the determined magistrate, George James Boyes, who, with the Town Guards, supported by garrison troops, fought off the commando. Boyes later became Chief Magistrate in the Cape, and Boyes Drive is named after him.
The book includes 340 members of the Malan's Commando with what information on each that we've been able to find. There are also the names of 151 Town Guards. We have been able to source only the names of most of them.
Taffy and David Shearing, now retired to Santos Haven, Mossel Bay, have produced their latest book in the Cape Commandos Series. It is illustrated by 184 photographs, including many taken by a Captain in Brabant's Horse. In 1989 Taffy wrote her MA on "The Second Invasion of the Cape Colony 1901 - 1902 during the Second Anglo-Boer War". This was followed in 2005 by PhD on "The Cape Rebel of the South African War 1899 - 1902" at Stellenbosch University. David, author of "Karoo: Wild Flower Guide 6" edits the Cape Commando Series.
