An original 1868 One Third Farthing struck for use in Malta during the reign of Queen Victoria. These unusual small bronze coins were produced specifically for circulation in Malta, where they equated to the old Maltese grano, and were never legal tender in Britain itself.
The obverse features the young head portrait of Queen Victoria with the surrounding Latin legend, while the reverse displays a crown above the denomination ONE THIRD FARTHING within an ornate wreath. This diminutive issue is catalogued as KM750 and is one of the more interesting British colonial bronze coins of the Victorian period.
With a mintage of only 144,000 pieces in 1868, this date is considerably scarcer than many Victorian bronze issues and is popular with both Malta and British Empire collectors.
Condition - F to VF
Moderate to heavy circulation wear is present on both sides, with the main portrait outline, date, crown and denomination still visible. The coin has even brown toning with scattered marks and light surface wear consistent with age.
