Mandela Capture Site

Each Mandela Capture Site Medallion comes in a box that is representative of something that a prisoner would have used many years ago to keep small memorable and important items such as photographs, documents, and letter.

Each tin is uniquely aged like no other, to capture the essence of the time in which this event occured. A "secret compartment" is hidden within containing a copy of the official Warrant of Arrest issued for Mandela all those years ago as well as a copy of the front page newspaper story from the Rand Daily Mail dating 08 August 1962 with details of his capture.

On the 5th August 1962, Nelson Mandela was arrested. The arrest set in motion a chain of events that made history around the world. 2012 marked the 50th anniversary of his arrest which took place three kilometers outside Howick on the R103 near Lions River. He had been on the run from Security Police for seventeen months. A monument has been erected at the site, the place where he said goodbye to freedom for 27 years, with an embedded plaque that reads "Tsiamelo" meaning "Place of Goodness"...
