The Mandela Luthuli Laureate Twin set was minted by the Mint of Norway to honour both
Luthuli’s and Mandela’s Nobel Peace Prize awards. In 1961 Chief Albert Luthuli was awarded
the 1960 Nobel Prize for Peace (it had been held over that year) while Mandela received his
joint award together with FW De Klerk in 1993.
Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli was born in 1898 in Rhodesia and only moved to South Africa in 1906 after
the death of his father. On completing a teacher’s course from a Methodist Institution at Edendale around
1917, Luthuli took up a job as principal in an intermediate school in Natal. In 1920, he attended a
higher teacher’s training course at Adams College with a scholarship provided by the government and joined the
training college staff afterward. In 1944, Luthuli began his political journey as part of the African National
Congress. He stood alongside Nelson Mandela as he fought for African's rights to equality and justice
following a non-violent resistance. This struggle came to an end for Luthuli in 1963 when he was one of many to
be captured and arrested in the Liliesleaf raid.
Situated in the Johannesburg suburb of Rivonia, Liliesleaf had become a place of refuge for
leaders and stalwarts of the liberation struggle. Its role as the nerve centre of the struggle ended
with a dramatic police raid on 11 July 1963. The raid uncovered the plan detailing how the
resistance movement intended to overthrow the government. This led to the Rivonia Trial,
which resulted in the imprisonment on Robben Island of struggle activists Nelson Mandela,
Walter Sisulu, Ahmed Kathrada and Govan Mbeki.
