You are looking at an original 19th century map ‘Africa - Engraved March 1st 1803 Cadell & Davies London’. The map comes from Arrowsmiths "Map of Africa', an attractive map with outline in colour and interesting details and large areas with a distinct lack of any detail. The sheet, blank, and joined on the reverse, measures 270mm x 220mm.
The year 1803 is important to South Africa, this was the year the British formally handed the Cape Colony over to the Batavian Republic, under the terms of the Treaty of Amiens. Like most treaties, it was broken again by the British in 1806!!
In 1767, upon the retirement of Andrew Miller, Thomas Cadell, 1742-1802, succeeded to the bookselling and publishing business. Cadell became one of the foremost publishers of his time
before his retirement in 1793. At this time he made over the business to his son, Thomas Cadell, 1773-1836, and his apprentice and assistant, William Davies, d. 1820; Cadell and Davies ran the business together until Davies’ death, and Cadell carried on until his own death in 1836.
Aaron Arrowsmith (1750–1823) was an English cartographer, engraver and publisher and founding member of the Arrowsmith family of geographers. He moved to Soho Square, London from Winston, County Durham when about twenty years of age, and was employed by John Cary, the engraver and William Faden. He became Hydrographer to the Prince of Wales ca. 1810 and subsequently to the King in 1820. In January 1790 he made himself famous by his large chart of the world on Mercator Projection.

The map is not pristine in any way, it certainly has been used, but considering its age of over 200 years, that is to be expected.
The edges are slightly ragged and the map shows some marking and discoloration.
This is a genuine antique and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Please remember the classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not.
