It was released on September 29, 2009 through Island Records in the U.S. and November 23, 2009 with Mercury Records in the UK. The album was predominately produced and written by Carey, Christopher "Tricky" Stewart and Terius "The-Dream" Nash.

Upon release the album was well-received by critics who awarded it 69/100, higher ratings than her two previous efforts. However, the album only managed to debut and peak at #3 in the U.S. with sales of 168,000 which was low compared to previous album, E=MC² which debuted at #1 with sales over 463,000 in 2008. A planned remix/features album has been cancelled. To date, the album has sold over two million copies worldwide.
