Commonly known as : Marimo Moss Ball
Botanical Name: Aegagropila linnaei
These little chat are actually not a moss at all it's a rare type of algae that naturally forms into a perfect velvety green ball. Found in cold freshwater lakes in Japan, Iceland, and parts of Northern Europe, it slowly rolls along lakebeds with the movement of water, keeping its round shape and deep green colour. In your home, it's one of the easiest "plants" you'll ever look after,
Light:
Marimo's do best in low to medium light. They initially grew in the depths of the cold lakes, so the less light the better. They have to kept away from direct light and sun as this will cause damaged to the filaments.
💧 Water:
Change the water every one to two weeks with fresh, room-temperature water. If you're using tap water, let it stand overnight so chlorine can evaporate. During summer, you can even pop the bowl in the fridge for a few hours if it feels warm Marimos love cooler water.
🌿 Cleaning & Shaping:
Give your Marimo a gentle squeeze under clean water every now and then to release trapped air. You can also roll it between your palms after each water change to help it keep its round shape.
🪴 Companions & Display:
They look fantastic on their own in glass jars, or you can group several together with small pebbles, shells, or driftwood. They're safe to keep with most freshwater fish and shrimp, and they help improve water quality by absorbing nitrates.
🍃 Fertiliser:
They don't need fertiliser, but a little aquarium plant food once in a while won't hurt.
🐛 Pests & Problems:
Almost none if the surface ever develops brown spots, gently rinse it out and roll it again.
If your marimo turns brown, make sure to move him to a cooler location with less light. They may recover and turn green again on their own. If not, you may add a tiny amount of aquarium ocean salt.
For a spoil every week or two you can add in ice blocks or put him in the fridge for 24 hrs. It may seem a little weird but he will definitely enjoy the cool!
Simple, fascinating, and full of personality, the Marimo Moss Ball is one of those little green companions that quietly adds calm to your home.
