The Bell bean tree is a small tree with smooth or rough gray bark and odd-pinnate 2-4 pairs opposite leaf up to 18" long, asymmetric acuminate leaflets are medium. Elliptic or ovate.

It has funnel shaped flowers with maroon stripes in the throat. Markhamia zanzibarica begins to bloom when 3-5 ft tall.

The Bell bean tree grows well even in poor soil.

The fruits are carried slender capsules. The seeds are winged. Germination is rapid & the growth rate is moderate during the first year. This tree has great potential for container plantings.
