Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 brings back the action RPG formula that lets players assemble a team of four Marvel heroes to fight through linear levels filled with enemies, bosses, and light puzzles. While the PS2 version lacks the visual polish and feature depth of its PS3/360 counterparts, the core hack-and-slash gameplay remains intact.
The combat revolves around basic attacks, special powers, and fusion abilitiesteam-up attacks that vary depending on character combinations. Theres a decent variety of heroes to choose from, and team synergy provides minor stat boosts. However, the AI can be clumsy, and the combat may feel button-mashy after a while due to its repetitive nature.
Set during Marvels Civil War storyline, the game presents a split narrative where players must choose between supporting Iron Mans pro-registration side or Captain Americas anti-registration faction. This choice slightly changes missions and available characters, adding replayability.
The story is simplified in the PS2 version, with fewer cutscenes and less voice acting. Still, the basic arc of heroes divided by ideology remains engaging enough for Marvel fans.
Single-player campaign: The main draw, offering about 10-12 hours of gameplay.
Local co-op: Up to 2 players on PS2, with drop-in/drop-out functionality.
Character upgrades: Heroes level up and unlock new powers, which can be assigned manually or automatically.
Fusion powers: While not as flashy on PS2, they still allow for strategic team-ups.
Customization is more limited compared to other versions, and the overall RPG depth is scaled down.
The PS2 version runs at a lower resolution with simpler textures, fewer effects, and downgraded cutscenes. Environments can feel bland, and enemy designs repeat often. Still, for the hardware, it runs relatively smoothly and delivers solid animations for each hero.
Menus and HUDs are functional but dated, and loading screens are more frequent than ideal.
Voice acting is present but less extensive than on newer platforms. Some characters are voiced well, while others sound generic. Music is serviceable, with heroic and dramatic tones, but nothing particularly memorable. Sound effects do the job, though they lack impact, especially during fusion attacks.
Large cast of playable Marvel heroes
Fusion attacks offer variety in combat
Split Civil War narrative adds replay value
Simple, accessible beat-em-up gameplay
Local co-op adds fun with a friend
Repetitive combat and level design
Watered-down visuals and features compared to newer versions
Shallow RPG mechanics
Generic enemy types and weak AI
Less cinematic presentation
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 on PS2 is a trimmed-down version of the full experience, but it still manages to deliver some superhero fun. Its a nostalgic, arcade-style brawler that caters to fans who want to team up and smash enemies with their favorite Marvel characters. However, it lacks polish and depth, and better versions exist on other platforms.
Score: 6 / 10
