WHAT A SPECIAL FIND! REALLY OLD pair of binoculars - or Galilean field glasses. In very good working order, & good-looking for their age. Made of leather covered brass, they still have their original leather case. Length: 13cm x 12cm at widest point. There is no maker's mark, but they look very similar to those produced by Thomas Armstrong & Brother Ltd which were produced between 1837 & 1901 (see last picture from Historyme.wordpress.com). Also known as opera or theatre glasses, they were particularly popular among horse racing fans. They have 3 views and magnifications: "Theatre", "Field" and "Marine", which can be seen on the eyepiece-changing mechanism. (According to Watson (1995), in "Binoculars, Opera Glasses and Field Glasses", the differences in magnification aren't great).
