RARE VINTAGE (EARLY 1940's) GERMAN CERAMIC MARZI & REMY BEER TANKARD WITH HINGED PEWTER LID

THE FACTORY WAS FOUNDED IN 1879 AND LICENSED IN 1880, BY ANTON MARZI AND HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW SIMON PETER REMY. GUSTAV THINWIEBEL JOINED THE COMPANY IMMEDIATELY AS ITS MODELLER AND A PEWTER FOUNDRY WAS ADDED IN 1881. THE COMPANY PRODUCED BLUE-GREY SALT GLAZED STONEWARE AND IN 1883 CREAM STONEWARE. IN 1931 A. MARZI PASSED AWAY AND HIS SON-IN-LAW JOHANN OTTO BUHLER TOOK OVER THE MANAGEMENT AND OWNERSHIP. IN 1941 BUHLERS SON OTTO TOOK OVER, FOLLOWED BY HIS GRANDSON, OTTO GEORGE BUHLER IN 1953. IN 1994 THE COMPANY WAS PURCHASED BY S.P GERZ

THIS COLLECTABLE TANKARD WILL HAVE BEEN MANUFACTURED DURING THE PERIOD WHEN JOHANN OTTO BUHLER'S SON OTTO WILL HAVE MANAGED THE COMPANY - 1941 to 1953

THE ITEM IS AN APPEALING AND COLLECTABLE RARE CERAMIC GERMAN BEER TANKARD MANUFACTURED BY MARZI & REMY. THE TANKARD HAS AN ORNATELY CRAFTED HANDLE AND IS DECORATED WITH RAISED RELIEF SCENERY BASED ON GERMAN FOLK IMAGERY. THE TANKARD IS FITTED WITH A HINGED PEWTER LID ALSO DECORATED IN RAISED RELIEF BUT WITH A ROCOCO STYLE LEAF AND SCROLL PATTERN. THIS PATTERN IS ALSO PRESENT ON THE LOVELY PEWTER THUMB FINIAL
