Massenet: Manon - Kenneth William, The Royal Ballet, Jennifer Penney, Anthony Dowell DVD

This is a recording made in 1982 of an excellent performance by The Royal Ballet of this dramatic masterpiece choreographed by Kenneth MacMillan. The main cast includes Jennifer Penny (the title role), Anthony Dowell (Des Grieux), David Wall (Lescaut), Derek Rencher (Monsieur G.M.) and Monica Mason (Lescaut's mistress). With the exception of Penny, all these dancers participated in the work's premiere in 1974. (Antoinette Sibley danced the title role in the premiere.)

Penny and Dowell show complete rapport. They are both excellent in acting as well as dancing. Their pas de deux are imbued with passion and emotions. I saw their performances at the Royal Opera House in the early 1980's, and this DVD reminds me of the deep impression I received then. David Wall is an excellent Lescaut - a character dancing role. I think it will be difficult to surpass the above cast.

The beautiful music - originally bits and pieces by Massenet - arranged and orchestrated by Leighton Lucas - is played very well under the baton of Ashley Lawrence.
