Matchbox Lesney 3c Mercedes Ambulance Original Box
Please note flaps issue
The Merc ambulance was a transitional model starting life in 1967 as a regular wheels item, with black plastic wheels, later being changed to Superfast wheels. It is usually off white or cream but some Superfast models were in military green. The casting changed a number of times over the years, starting out with an opening tailgate and having realistically shaped wheel arches, elliptical at the rear. To accommodate the Superfast wheels the arches were made round and later enlarged to accommodate the wider Superfast wheels. During the Superfast period the rear hatch was cast shut.
The Matchbox Mercedes-Benz Binz Ambulance (3c) was added to the range in 1967. In 1970 it was converted to Superfast wheels and it was deleted two years later in 1972. In the regular wheels issue look out for round rear wheel arches, in the Superfast series look for green windows.
