The Matchbox Superfast range was created in 1968/69, as a way of competing with the popular Mattel range of Hot Wheels cars. Lesney retooled the factory and began to produce models with thinner axels and free-rolling ‘Mag’ wheels, along with suspension, which would allow the cars to go faster than RW (Regular Wheels) models.
The Flying Bug was produced from 1972 until 1975, when it was replaced in the range with the car transporter.
The Flying Bug is a reproduction of a VW Beetle, complete with a large rear fin/spoiler and two large jets on the roof. The front windscreen is open, and the car contains an over-sized head of a driver in a metal helmet.
It was produced in a metallic red finish, with grey windows, yellow jets and a black-and-white decal sticker on the bonnet featuring a German cross. As it is part of the Superfast range, it has the thinner wheels and axels built to make it go faster than standard models.
