ANTIQUE ENGRAVED ETCHING WITH ORIGINAL HAND COLOUR Engraving is the practice of incising a design onto a hard (usually steel or copper), usually flat surface by cutting grooves into it. The incised line or sunken area holds the ink. Etching is a print produced by printing from a metal plate that has been etched. A dampened paper will usually be fed against the plate, covered by a blanket, so when pressed by rolling press it is squeezed into the plate's ink-filled grooves when the paper is lifted, revealing the paper and printed image. In the era before colour printing became common and cheap, antique prints were coloured by hand. They were generally coloured in factory like conditions usually by women or children on production lines, although the quality is often suprisingly good.
