The importance of preservatives in Dry dog food

Dry dog food greatest risk of becoming not fit for consumption is represented by a chemical reaction know as OXIDATION. This is a normal occuring process in nature and living organisms have developed metabolic processes to prevent and repair damage of cells caused by oxidation.

For different reasons, the component of the dry dog food that is the most sensitive to the oxidation process is the FAT. When fat is oxidized we can observe a reduction in palatability (acceptability), nutritional value and sometime the food can become unsafe to eat. It is therefore of paramount importance to protect the dry food from oxidation and this is achieved by using substances called antioxidant preservatives. Antioxidants are classified as natural or not. Examples of natural antioxidant are tocopherols, citric acid, rosemary extract while non-natural are BHT, BHA, Etoxyquin. Although there is growing concern about the “toxicity” of non-natural antioxidants to date no peer reviewed research has been published confirming long term damage/illness, related to these substances in dogs. Currently more studies are under way but until conclusive results are submitted there will be no legislation prohibiting the use of BHT, BHA or Ethoxyquin in both human and dog foods. On the other hand, consumers must read labels or contact the dog food manufacturer to establish wich antioxidant has been used it that particular product so to meet their preferences regarding natural or synthetic antioxidants.

SIMBIO has been developed keeping these worries in mind. We are able to have access to untreated raw materials such as the beef meal which is produced closely to the manufacturing plant and therefore can be stabilized by natural preservation, furthermore we do not add any fat, digest and tallow before, during and after production of SIMBIO. These animal products are ready available but their preservation is often achieved by non-natural antioxidants. SIMBIO has therefore two great advantages 1) naturally preserved 2) low fat content.
