Maytenus is a genus of flowering plants in the staff vine family, Celastraceae. Members of the genus are distributed throughout Central and South America, Southeast Asia, Micronesia and Australasia, the Indian Ocean and Africa. They grow in a very wide variety of climates, from tropical to subpolar. Maytenus lucida commonly known as Cape Koko Tree, Cape Maytenus or Kaapse Koko-boom is a South African endemic species found in the Western Cape Province. It is synonymously known as Celastrus lucidus or Gymnosporia lucida. Maytenus lucida grows into a 60cm to 120 cm tall much-branched shrub. During winter it bears whitish flowers.
