MEDALS AND TESTIMONIAL
Set consisting of:
1. Letter (testimonial) written in 1847 plus gold coin "medal"
2. Two medals for 1877-78 war for husband and wife (Nursing Sister and Doctor)
During 1847 General J G Cuyler wrote a testimonial for G Lourens Muller who according to the clipping from the newspaper, at the time of his daughter's death, was a Scout to General Cuyler. He was shot in heroic action in 1846 in the Xhosa war.
The set consist of the testimonial, the medal made from a gold coin and a bullet that was removed from his leg as well as a piece of leather from his boot. General Cuyler got the gold coin from Sir David Baird.
The other medals are from his daughter and son in law. She was a nursing Sister and he a Doctor during later war/s. His medal reflects the dat 1877-78.
General Cuyler was one of the founders of Uitenhage and the town Cuylercille was named after him, after the settlement of the 1820 Settlers.
The coin is 24 Carat with a weight of 14.3 grams.
