Meeresteijn Shipwreck: Dutch Silver Rijder (Zwolle 1677)
"The Meeresteijn has been wrecked with heavy loss of life at Jutten Island"
This was the urgent message brought to Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel in Cape Town on the 6th April, 1702. It came from the Station-keeper of the Dutch East India Company at Saldanha Bay, seventy miles to the north.
In the South African Numismatic Journal (Number 7) of November 1972, Dr. Frank Mitchell notes that 3 Silver Rijders from the City of Zwolle dated 1677 were recovered from the Meeresteijn. Our coin comes with an old photo copy of a COA.
