MEISSEN MARK HISTORY:
The swords mark is one of the oldest and most well-known marks in the world.
Meissen introduced its famous cobalt-blue crossed swords logo in the 1720s to distinguish its products from those of competing factories that were beginning to spring up around Europe.
It is derived from the arms of Frederick the Wise emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 1486 to 1525, who is mostly remembered for the worldly protection of his subject Martin Luther.
From 1722-1762: Smallish Crossed sword mark applied to rear of base underneath the glase.
From 1763-1823: A point was added to the swords or a star was added between the handles.
From 1824-1923: Around 1850 the sword were created with slightly curved blades and a distinctive point as a pommel at each end of the curved handles (reffered to as Knauf-Schwerter).
From 1924-1934: Blue crossed swords mark with dot between top of blades.
From 1935-1944: Blue crossed swords mark with straight crosspieces.
From 1945-1947: Blue crossed swords mark with crescent below.
From 1945-1973: Blue crossed swords mark with straight crosspieces.
From 1974 the word Meissen is seen below the swords.

MODEL OR SHAPE NUMBERS: From 1764 engraved or incised model numbers were given. Starting with A1-Z99 and from 1851 with A100-Z300. After 1973 a five digit Arabic number were used. Currently the company use a five digit number and letter combination.

ARTIST SIGNATURES: Artist signatures are rarely found on Meissen porcelain.

MEISSEN (1710-present): Meissen Porcelain (Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen) is one of the preeminent porcelain factories in Europe and was the first to produce true porcelain outside of Asia. It was established in 1710 under the auspices of King Augustus II the Strong of Saxony-Poland (16701733), a keen collector of Asian ceramics, particularly Ming porcelain.
Starting in 1933, artistic freedom was limited at the factory under the Nazi regime, and after World War II, when the region became part of East Germany, it struggled to reconcile its elite past with the values of the Communist government. In 1969, however, new artistic director Karl Petermann reintroduced the early designs and fostered a new degree of artistic license. Meissen became one of the few companies to prosper in East Germany.
Owned by the State of Saxony since reunification, in 1990, Meissen continues to produce its classic designs together with new ones developed collaboratively with artists from all over the world.
