This is a rare pair of MELAMINE (injection-moulded plastic) in-flight service trays from the classic "Jet Age" era of South African Airways (SAA). These trays feature a bright, era-specific yellow finish and include a raised circular cup-holder alongside a rectangular snack section. They were designed specifically for light refreshments and economy-class service, providing a durable, lightweight solution for passenger laps or fold-down tray tables.
PROVENANCE AND HISTORY These trays are distinctive because they feature the SAL / SAA branding, the iconic WINGED SPRINGBOK silhouette. This specific emblem was the primary branding for the airline from the late 1950s through to the mid-1970s, before being phased out for the orange-tail designs of the 1980s.
The reverse of each tray bears the manufacturer's mark "N.I.P.", which almost certainly identifies them as products of NATAL INJECTION PLASTICS (or a similar local firm like National Industrial Plastics). During this period, SAA heavily supported the local South African manufacturing sector by contracting domestic firms for cabin service-ware, making these trays an interesting piece of both aviation and industrial heritage.
