Memoir regarding the Kaffers, Hottentots, and Bosjemans of South Africa, by Lieut-col. Sutherland, 2nd Regiment Bombay Light Cavalry. Vol 1. Published 1845
A very rare book. This Memoir was written after Lieut-col. Sutherland's four month's tour through the districts of George, Uitenhage, Albany, Cradock, Graaff-Reinet and Somerset in the mid-1800s. He left Cape Town thinking the climate of the Frontier would be more beneficial for his health, and had no intention to write and publish this Memoir, according to his letter in the front of the book to the Honorable John Montagu, Colonial Secretary at the time. His observations about the border policy of the British Government makes for very interesting reading, also his observations about the various native tribes that he encountered.
This first volume of Sutherland's Memoir was published in 1845 by Pike & Philip, St Georges' Street, Cape Town. Unfortunately, the second volume, which was published the next year, went missing.
