Published by The Wild Life Protection Society of South Africa, 1958, hardcover, illustrated, index, 314 pages, no dust jacket, condition; good.

One of the first rangers at what is now the Kruger National Park in South Africa, Harry Wolhuter was quite a character and a true pioneer. A man who killed a lion with a small knife as he was being dragged into the bush in the jaws of the Lion. The knife and the lion skin are still on display at Skukuza rest camp in the park. I enjoyed reading of his adventures and exploits, his descriptive writing style painted an incredible picture of South Africa around the turn of the century, and at the tail end of the Boer wars.

Really amazing book, very clear and concise writing and you learn so much about both Harry's life and times, but also about the development of the game park itself. There's plenty of adventure here, but it's not told in a way where Harry is trying to impress, it's just simple stories telling the reader about amazing and sometimes life-threatening events Harry and his acquaintances went through. Plenty about the wildlife as well, their habits, and their quirks. If you like adventure, safaris, vintage autobiographies, or history, this one is a mostly forgotten gem, pick it up! A quick side note: Harry worked with an illustrator who was very familiar with the animals in the area, and there's a lovely illustration or 2 on practically every page in a "sketched" style, and they are incredibly well done and help you get into the book. Some are about the events being talked about, while others are drawings of the game animals in their environment. I loved that little touch. I will be keeping this one on my shelf for a long time, for when my need for adventure strikes.
