Additional Information
Memories of a game ranger is one of the most delightful books ever written about the Kruger National Park and especially the pioneer years. It is difficult to put down once you have started it and Wolhuter's fluent style of writing makes it easy to read. Harry Wolhuter, former member of the notorious Steinaecker's Horse corps during the Anglo-Boer War, was appointed as ranger in the Sabi Game Reserve (later Kruger National Park) in 1902. It was mostly the experience he gained of the Lowveld during the War, which made him a suitable incumbent. The book tells the story of his days in the bush, his efforts to preserve the wild life and his encounters with dangerous animals (like the time he was ambushed by lions), poachers, tourists, the dogs and horses who served him and his wartime experiences.
