Mendelssohn is probably not a composer that comes to mind when thinking about recordings by Herbert Von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic. Yet he clearly had an affinity for these symphonies, in the same way he did for: Haydn, J.: 6 "Paris" & 12 "London" Symphonies. And perhaps that is not a coincidence - both sets of works have a predominant sunny, cheerful feel, whilst never remotely coming across as mere feel-good music.
The conducting, playing and recording is of uniformly high quality across all five of the symphonies (which are split across three CDs). If you already have other versions, Karajan is definitely worth hearing. And if you don't have any others, this is an easy way to acquire a set that might be the only one you find you need. - Amazon user review
