Bishop Nathaniel Merriman, originally from Marlborough, arrived at the Cape in 1848 aged 40. This is the only biography of him. Known as the 'walking predikant' he visited every remote corner from Bathurst to Bloemfontein on foot (using his horse only to carry his belongings) & from Graaff-Reinet to the Great Kei river. His edited journals appear as Vol.37 of the Van Riebeeck Society 1st Series. He died in a freak accident near Grahamstown.
