MURANO GLASS: Murano glass is a specific style of glass that's handmade and is made with bold colors that are often layered in a technique that is called Sommerso that was developed by Murano master Antonio Da Ross in the 1930s. All Murano pieces are hand-blown glass or mouth-blown. There will likely be small imperfections, like air bubbles, because of the way the colors are layered.
These decorative glass pieces are made by Murano masters, or highly skilled glass artisans in Murano, Italy who use bright colors. Murano Islands: Murano is a series of islands linked by bridges in the Venetian Lagoon, northern Italy. It lies about 1.5 kilometres (1 mile) north of Venice and measures about 1.5 km (1 mi) across with a population of just over 5,000 (2004 figures). It is famous for its glass making.

WHAT IS SOMMERSO TECHNIQUE?
One of the most common techniques is Sommerso, which in Italian literally means submerged. This technique is used to create several layers of glass (usually with different contrasting colors) inside a single object, giving the illusion of immersed colors that lay on top of each other without mixing. This is done by uniting different layers of glass through heat and repeatedly immersing them in pots of molten colored glass. This technique is quite recognizable: it is characterized by an outer layer of colorless glass and thick layers of colored glass inside it, as if a big drop of color had been captured inside the transparent glass. When one first sees these objects, it seems almost impossible to conceive such beautiful colors being locked so perfectly inside what would seem solid glass, and then undoubtedly one begins to wonder how ever did they manage to achieve such a complex game of shapes and colors right in the middle of a clear glass object.

WHAT IS CHALCEDONY TECHNIQUE?
The chalcedony glass is a particular decorative type of glass made from a mix of coloury metals, mainly green, brown and purple to imitate the precious Chalcedony stones such as the agate, onyx, malachite, lapis lazuli and jasper.
ITS A TECHNIQUE THAT WAS LOST SINCE ANCIENT TIMES AND REDISCOVERED BY MURANO MASTERS. Chalcedony or Calcedonio glass-making technique was first used in Egypt during Roman times, and then it was re-discovered in Murano in the fifteenth century. The secret of the technique was then lost again and subsequently re-discovered by Murano master glass-maker Lorenzo Radi in the later part of the 19th century.
This technique involves mixing scraps of colored and white opaline or iridescent glass and Cristallo glass and fusing them together under high temperatures. Once the pieces fuse completely, various mineral oxides are added repeatedly to the glass mixture and dispersed to create unique color effects. These may include cobalt oxide to achieve blue colors, nitrate of silver for matte appearance, potassium oxide, and others.
Finally, the objects are blown from the mixture into the desired form, and characteristic color streaks obtained by using mineral oxides become even more pronounced as the glass curves during this process.

MARKINGS: NO DEFINITE MURANO ITALIAN STICKERS OR LABELS OR MARKINGS BUT IT IS CLEARLY HANDMADE USING THE SOMMERSO TECHNIQUE WITH BUBBLES AND IMPERFECTIONS DUE TO LAYERING CLEARLY VISIBLE.
