Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection (PS3) Review

Released: 2011
Developer: Kojima Productions (HD Remaster by Bluepoint Games)
Platform: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation Vita

The Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection is a must-play for both longtime fans and newcomers to the series. It includes remastered versions of some of the greatest stealth-action games ever made, with improved visuals, smoother performance, and modern controls. While a few things are missing (MGS1 and Peace Walker's co-op), this collection remains one of the best ways to experience the Metal Gear Solid saga.

Whats Included?

This collection features three iconic games, all remastered in HD:

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001, PS2)

  • Follows Raiden and Solid Snake as they uncover a massive conspiracy.
  • Features deep storytelling, stealth gameplay, and philosophical themes.
  • Enhanced visuals and 60 FPS make this the best way to play MGS2.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004, PS2)

  • A Cold War-era prequel starring Naked Snake (Big Boss).
  • Introduces survival mechanics, including camouflage, hunting for food, and treating injuries.
  • One of the most beloved and emotional stories in gaming history.
  • Includes the Subsistence version, which features a free camera mode (huge improvement over the original).

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (2010, PSP)

  • A direct sequel to MGS3, focusing on Big Boss's rise as a leader.
  • Base-building and recruitment mechanics, which later influenced MGS V.
  • Smooth 60 FPS gameplay on PS3, making it much better than the PSP version.

What Works

Remastered Graphics & 60 FPS Performance

  • Sharper textures, improved lighting, and smooth animations make these classics feel fresh.
  • 60 FPS gameplay significantly improves responsiveness, especially for MGS2 and MGS3.

Tightened Controls & Modernized Camera (MGS3)

  • MGS3: Subsistences free camera mode makes stealth gameplay much smoother.
  • The controls feel more intuitive than their original PS2 counterparts.

Tons of Content & Replay Value

  • Each game is packed with deep stories, hidden secrets, and unlockables.
  • MGS3 and Peace Walker have long campaigns with plenty of extras, including VR missions and side-ops.

Peace Walker Feels Like a Full Console Game

  • Originally a PSP game, Peace Walker benefits hugely from the HD upgrade.
  • While originally designed for handheld play, it fits well on PS3, with improved visuals and smoother gameplay.

What Doesnt Work

Metal Gear Solid 1 is Missing

  • The original MGS (1998, PS1) is not included, meaning players cant experience the start of the saga unless they get it separately.

Peace Walker Lacks Online Co-op on PS3

  • The PSP version had online co-op, but the PS3 version removes that feature (local co-op only).

Some Minor Cutscene & Audio Issues

  • While the HD remaster is excellent, a few cutscenes and audio elements werent fully optimized for the higher resolution.

Final Verdict

🟢 Final Score: 9.5/10
The Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection is a phenomenal remaster of three legendary stealth-action games, featuring upgraded graphics, smooth performance, and improved controls. While it lacks MGS1 and Peace Walkers online co-op, this remains the best way to experience MGS2, MGS3, and Peace Walker on modern consoles.

Pros:
Stunning HD visuals and smooth 60 FPS gameplay
MGS3: Subsistence version with free camera controls
Tons of content, replay value, and deep storytelling
Peace Walker HD plays like a full console game

Cons:
No Metal Gear Solid 1 (PS1)
Peace Walker loses online co-op on PS3
Minor cutscene and audio inconsistencies

Recommendation: If you love stealth-action games, deep storytelling, and tactical gameplay, this collection is a must-own. Its one of the best HD remasters on PS3, making it the perfect way to experience some of the greatest games ever made.
