The South African Reserve Bank was instituted in 1921 and became the sole issuer of bank notes. The twenty rand replaced the pre-decimal £10 denomination. Language predomination changed every 100 000 forms rather than every 1 million forms for the lower denominations.

Special features: This note depicted flora and fauna on the obverse side. It is the only note that had an ethnic image, viz. a mother carrying a bowl on her head and holding her child’s hand. The reverse side depicts a mining head gear scene.
