Of all the truly solo albums (in other words, excluding Blue Jays) this album probably grew on me the fastest. My brother and I listened to it together, and we both loved the title song "The Promise" immediately.
Although the overall "sound" wasn't Moodies, it had the same kind of structure - the poem, the instrumental, some strong philosophy/spirituality. Carry On was a melodic nod to Justin ("live just a little bit more, take a little bit less..."). I also liked the strong acoustic guitar sound. I thought Mike's experiment in different sound had a confident solidity. I'd barely picked up all of the group and solo releases at the time this came out, so there wasn't a lot to compare it to at the time. But I think The Promise has an overall sound that still holds up very well today. And lyrically, well, I hadn't even known about their UFO encounter yet. But that's only grown more in fashion with the passing of years.
