A microplate reader is a laboratory instrument used to measure the absorbance, fluorescence, or luminescence of multiple samples in a microplate.

This allows for high-throughput analysis in a variety of fields, such as drug discovery and scientific research, by quantifying biological and chemical reactions in 96, 384, or even 1536 wells at once.  

How it works
    • Light source: A light source shines a filtered beam through the plate wells. 
    • Detection: A detector measures the amount of light that is absorbed, emitted as fluorescence, or produced through luminescence as it passes through each well. 
  • Quantification: This optical signal is converted into data that a computer can analyze to quantify the concentration or properties of the sample in each well. 
Applications
  • Drug discovery:

    Researchers use microplate readers to test the effects of potential drug compounds on biological samples. 

  • ELISA:

    It is commonly used to read the results of ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) tests to detect and quantify proteins.
