Works is the cut-down version of Office that Microsoft keeps alive to compete with all the budget office suites.
It's also included with some new PCs. For a word processor, spread sheet, database, calendar and dictionary, it sounds good value.
Works Word Processor looks very similar to Word (pre-2007), with the same button and menu layout. You can format text and even insert a spread sheet into a document. The new Task Pane lists recently opened documents and allows you to browse Works' templates, which is handy. Uniquely, this version can create and edit Microsoft Word 2007 documents, and it retains imported Word formatting much better than other word processors, but none of that is really surprising given that it's from Microsoft.
Number devil
The Works Spread sheet is a no-frills version of Excel. It coped well enough with basic maths and even some more demanding tasks, such as creating conditional formulas and subtracting one date from another. It can also sort data. There's a reasonably good tool for creating charts, and, like Word Processor, it can work with Office 2007 files.
