Description: Mid-Century SylvaC Lucknow Baluster Shape Vase.
A striking, highly collectible mid-century British art pottery vase by SylvaC (Shaw & Copestake) in the distinctive, high-shoulder "Lucknow" ovoid baluster shape. It showcases a gorgeous, deeply moulded diagonal swirl relief that sweeps across the clay walls, creating beautiful movement and texture.
Finished in SylvaC's highly sought-after "Flat Lava" (or "Aurora") experimental drip glaze pattern. Unlike rough West German Fat Lava pieces, this is a smooth, glossy, multi-toned marbled glaze application that combines organic texture with a brilliant reflective sheen.
This is an exceptional autumnal palette blending rich caramel-tan, deep chestnut brown, ochre, and a heavy foaming white overlay. The frothy cream slip mimics a natural seafoam or volcanic ash texture, pooling thickly within the deep relief grooves of the swirl mold. As seen from the upper perspective, the glaze cascades uniformly over the smooth rim, cleanly transitioning into a rich, solid caramel-brown protective glaze lining that fully coats the interior cavity.
This masterpiece was produced at the historic Thomas Lawrence Falcon Works in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, England by the Shaw & Copestake company under the iconic trade name SylvaC. While famous for matte woodland figurines, their 1960s abstract art glazes are heavily sought after by high-end modern art collectors.
Did You Know? The "Flat Lava" or "Aurora" design series was Britains elegant, tactile response to the volcanic glaze phenomenon taking over European ceramics in the 1960s. Because every single item was dipped and drizzled individually by hand, the resulting marbled froth pattern is entirely unique to this vase.

Condition: Excellent vintage structural condition with high-gloss glaze preservation. The earthenware walls are solid, stable, and pleasingly heavy for their size. The top rim is smooth and completely free of any restoration work.
Visible Flaws: Minor age-related wear. No structural chips, deep impact fractures, cracks, or flea bites are present along the mouth or the upper shoulders. Very light, normal vintage crazing may be present within the clear glaze topcoat upon close inspection under direct sunlight, which is standard for 1960s earthenware from this region and verifies its age.
