Mid Victorian mahogany and marquetry 'Lazy Susan'
Mid Victorian mahogany and marquetry 'Lazy Susan'
This is a stunning example of a superb mahogany 'Lazy Susan" with the two tiers inlaid with a lighter wood and with marquetry 'shell' design.
This is a really large piece, measuring 42 cm high, the top tier measures 31cm in diameter whilst the lower tier measures 60 cm in diameter. The total weight is approximately 6.50kg
This is a rare piece, (try surfing the internet and see for yourself) and is in remarkably good condition throughout. It even sports a 'BADA' stamp (see photo on left, showing the top tier). For those who are not familiar with BADA, it stands for the 'British Antique Dealers Association' which was formed around 1918, in order to regulate honesty with antiques and the stamp is proof that the article is an antique as opposed to a copy and is 100 years old or more.
The origin of the 'Lazy Susan' is controversial. The one theory is that, servants in the 1800's, were known as 'Susans' and, consequently, the revolving centrepiece was known as a 'Lazy Susan', another name being 'Dumb Waiter'. However, the Americans prefer to equate it to the days of Thomas Jefferson.
