The Lower PALAEOLITHIC (Old Stone Age) Britain  2580,000 200,000 BCE
This is the period of the earliest known occupation of Britain by humans. This huge period saw many changes in the environment, mainly glacial.  Providing dating for this distant period is difficult and uncertain. The inhabitants were bands of hunter-gatherers who arrived from Northern Europe using the land  bridge (Doggerland) which, at that time, connected Britain to Europe. These hunter-gatherers lived before the ancestors of Neanderthals split from the ancestors of Homo sapiens 600,000 years ago. Flint tools such as bifacial hand axes, scrapers, points and flint flakes adapted as tools show an appearance.
