The story of an innocent, deceived by her compassion. Brabara, orphaned but wealthy at 27, finds her first chance at romance in Francis, an architect. Yet, even as she grasped at happiness, she plunged herself and her fiance into a whirlpool of terror. Discovering, at her father's death, of the existence of an illegitimate half-sister, Mignonette, Barbara gives way to a whim, brings Mignonette to England where she quickly displaces Barbara.

This is a macabre and charming tale.
