Born to a noodle-shop owner, Japanese jeweler  (18581954) worked in the seafood business before shifting his focus to  cultivation. In 1893, he successfully  with a semispherical specimen. His further experimentation would include black and white . This development gave Mikimoto a supply of what had once been a notoriously rare natural element and earned him the nickname The Pearl King. As he once said, My dream is to adorn the necks of all women around the world with pearls.
 
In 1899 in Tokyos Ginza district, Mikimoto opened his first, eponymous store in a white-stone building reminiscent of the color of pearls. He quickly earned a reputation for dazzling designs that blended Japanese craftsmanship and European influence. Following World War II, Mikimoto opened stores around the world, with locations now in Paris, New York City, Los Angeles and Shanghai. Though its founder died in 1954, the Mikimoto company has continued to build on the legacy he established.

MIKIMOTO:
Kokichi Mikimoto, devoted his life to pearls and was called the Pearl King. In 1893, he etched his name in history when he successfully created the world's first cultured pearls. Ever since, his lifelong dream of adorning the necks of all women around the world with pearls has lived on through Mikimoto, a company that has dedicated itself to the pursuit of beauty for over a century.
Natural pearls are extremely rare. In the wild, less than one in a thousand oysters will produce a pearl during its lifetime; hence they were a luxury only for the wealthy. Kokichi Mikimoto decided to try culturing pearls as they were loved by people all over the world. He was a dreamer, and he did not let his dream die. In 1893, he became the first in the world to successfully culture a semi-spherical pearl. He continued to culture many different types of pearls, including black and white South Sea pearls.
Kokichi sent skilled craftsmen to Europe to learn the latest design techniques and styles in jewellery, including Art Deco and Art Nouveau. Using the experience and knowledge they brought back from Europe, he spent decades blending traditional Japanese metalworking craftsmanship and European manufacturing techniques to create the distinctive Mikimoto style. Going beyond being the originator of cultured pearls, he succeeded in building the foundation for modern jewellery production in Japan.
